HALL St. Helena Winemaking Facility

We are excited to announce that we have completed our new state-of-the-art winemaking facility in St. Helena. We began the construction process just one year ago and with the first grapes arriving for the 2008 harvest, we are now seeing the fruits of our labor realized! We are currently in the process of becoming certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System (TM) encourages and accelerates global adoption in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. See more here.

Solar Energy

More than 25 percent of the energy needed to power the new winemaking facility is provided by the sun. Solar Photovoltaic cells (solar panels) placed on the roof tops of our barrel cellar & fermentation building are used to convert sunlight directly into electricity. There are approximately 42,000 square feet of photovoltaic panels (1 acre) in operation on our roofs.

Radiant floors allow for precision winemaking and maximum energy efficiency

Tubing embedded into the concrete of our new facility allows us to change the temperature of the floor. This warm or cold mass will maintain a constant, even temperature within the building with relatively little energy used. Chilled water is used as our cooling source, while hot water is used to heat the floors when required
Aside from achieving energy efficiency, this also allows our winemaking team the ability to precisely control the temperature inside our new buildings. During the wine aging process, chilled water is used to maintain a constant 55 degrees for optimal barrel aging. During fermentation, warm water is used to warm the space and encourage fermentation.
